Identity and folk culture: dependence / confrontation / indifference
On December 6, 2022, a roundtable "Identity and folk culture: dependence / confrontation / indifference" was held, to which experts from different fields were invited so that they could identify a view of identity specific to their professional field and thereby enrich general ideas about the processes of identification in culture.
The reasons for the roundtable were the exhibition "Defining yourself: subject/process/identity", which worked on the basis of HSE ART GALLERY from November 9 to December 14, and the first results of the project "Cultural citizenship and local solidarity: the experience of social inclusion of the audience of museums in Russia" (supported by the Russian Science Foundation, №22-78-10098).
Three representatives of our Laboratory took part in the roundtable at once: Elena R. Iarskaia-Smirnova, Konstantin Obukhov and moderator of the roundtable - Irina Shuvalova.
Based on the works presented at the exhibition and their own research experience, the members of the roundtable discussed possible ways of understanding "identity" today, the role of various institutions in the formation of identity policies, identified the place of ethnic and national in the process of personal identity formation, presented various options for ex- and inclusion in the situation of discovering similarities and differences in modern society.
The curator of the exhibition, Pierre-Christian Brochet, indicated that the artists whose works served as a starting point for the topic of discussion are acutely aware of the changes taking place with them and are trying to comprehend their place and the place of their culture in the modern world.
A video recording of the discussion is available on the channel of the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL.
