Ana Livia Araujo Esteves, from Brazil, lecturer at the HSE School of International Regional Studies, has recently defended her PhD at HSE University. In her interview with the HSE News Service, she talks about her research into Brazilian–Russian relations, the difficulties of the thesis defence process, and her further plans in academia.

In autumn of 2024, a delegation from Malaysia, led by Minister of Higher Education Zambry bin Abdul Kadir, visited the HSE campus in St Petersburg. One of the key topics of discussion was the initial results of the mirror laboratory, a joint initiative between HSE University-St Petersburg and the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM).

In 2025, HSE University-St Petersburg opened the Centre for Russian Language and Culture at the School of Arts and Humanities. The centre offers various courses for international applicants, the largest of which is the 'Pre-University Programme', a Russian preparatory course for those intending to enrol in full-time bachelor's and master's programmes. The number of applications has nearly doubled: as of today, more than 2,600 applications have been submitted for undergraduate programmes, and more than 2,400 for master's programmes. This increased interest from international applicants in studying at HSE confirms the university's status as one of the most sought-after Russian universities abroad.

Researchers at HSE University and InsideOutBio have applied machine learning to identify the location and functions of mirror-twisted DNA structures, known as Z-flipons, in human and mouse genomes. The scientists discovered which Z-DNA regions were conserved in both species throughout evolution and demonstrated for the first time that Z-DNA accelerates the process of creating RNA copies of genes. 

On March 2, an HSE Open Day for prospective undergraduates and specialist students will take place—one of the largest and most significant events for applicants and the entire university. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with students and representatives of educational programmes, plan their admission process, and immerse themselves in the HSE University atmosphere for a day. The event will be held in Russian.

A research team at HSE University has developed EyeFeatures, a Python library for analysing and modelling eye movement data. This tool is designed to simplify the work of scientists and developers by enabling them to efficiently process complex data and create predictive models.

Pavel Voloshchuk has been developing and researching educational products for 14 years. Since August 2024, he has led two master's programmes at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science: ‘Research and Entrepreneurship in Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Master of Data Science.’ In this interview, he talks about his career path, time management, and the specifics of academic supervision.
