Abstract

The Digital Literacy course will be focused on developing competencies essential for handling data and cover the basic topics crucial for secure and effective use of digital technologies and resources in everyday life.

Learning Objectives

  • During the Digital Literacy course, students will master the fundamental principles and methods of using digital tools in both their daily lives and academic pursuits.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Safeguarding their digital identity and ensuring digital hygiene (e.g. on social networks and while browsing news feeds).
  • Utilizing contemporary means of communication to organize teamwork and interactions during the educational process (e.g. email, messengers, systems for organizing group information storage).
  • Creating, using and ensuring the functionality of their digital space (including the ability to select the necessary devices for their tasks, configure settings for their purposes, connect to required resources, protect devices and related systems and networks using correct settings, networks, and antivirus/anti-spam systems).
  • Adhering to standards of safe and ethical behaviour on the Internet (such as using app stores, distinguishing fake media messages from real ones, checking the quality of information, distinguishing a spam email from a legitimate one, telling a real website from a phishing one, and using a secure connection to websites).
  • Mastering digital tools to solve problems, utilizing information and service support sources on the web.
  • Organizing office work through contemporary office systems (including drafting documents in accordance with established standards, using spreadsheets for simple data processing and visualization, preparing presentations for reporting work results, and creating and unpacking archives).
  • Using personal data and information technologies in compliance with state requirements, particularly in the field of personal data protection.
  • Using software and the results of other people's creative efforts (intellectual property) correctly, in line with license requirements.
  • Searching and selecting information for organizing work on the web, as well as across available text files and spreadsheets.
  • Analysing their own and others' work with digital resources, creating and appropriately applying instructions for themselves and their colleagues, and following instructions.
  • Structuring information and defining rules for storing and organizing information.
  • Understanding the possibilities of big data and being able to respond to specialists' questions about problems in their field.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Independent Assignment (IE, Independent Exam)
    The assignment is based on the Specification for Independent Exam in Digital Literacy, 2023–2024 Academic Year The Specification and the demo version of tasks can be found in the Digital Literacy Coursebook. If you fail an Independent Exam, you will be required to retake it to remedy your academic failure. The retake will be held online in a synchronous (live) mode with proctoring.
  • non-blocking In-Class (and Homework) Practical Assignments
    If you fail to submit an assignment on time, your score will be reduced by 50%, but you can still submit your assignment while a given topic is still being discussed.
  • non-blocking Group Project
    Can be retaken when failed, on an individual basis, as per the established criteria and for specific assignments. Zero points will be assigned for project components which cannot be completed individually (such as peer assessment at Stage 3) or repeated. If you fail to submit a project on time, your score will be reduced by 50%, but you can still submit it up to 7 days later.

  • 2023/2024 4th module
    Formula based on an 8-point grading scale: 0,25 * Independent Exam 0,25 * In-class (and Homework) Practical Assignments 0,3 * Group Project The grade awarded for interim assessment in the prerequisite course for the Independent Exam in Digital Literacy may not exceed 8 points. Rules for assigning 9 and 10 points for a prerequisite course are detailed in clauses 74 and 77 of the Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessment of Students: https://www.hse.ru/docs/551872110.html You can get 9 and 10 points by completing the Independent Exam in Digital Literacy or taking an independent assessment.
