Yulia Veselova on her visit to the Maastricht University
Yulia Veselova shared her impressions on her external PhD program in the Netherlands.
Between April 24 and May 31, my visit to the Maastricht University took place as part of my external PhD program. The School of Business and Economics is the largest faculty of the university, which combines many strong research teams. Among them, a significant role is played by a group of scientists involved in game theory and social choice theory at the Department of Quantitative Economics. My supervisors there - Hans Peters and Ton Storcken - are outstanding scientists in this field.
My work there is usually organized as follows: 2 times per week we meet with supervisors to discuss the current work, and the rest of time I spend on research. A workplace is usually provided by the faculty. I also used to take part in research seminars of the department and regular meetings of a group of PhD students of Hans Peters and Ton Storken. I want to mention the involvement and the real interest of my advisors to my work. During the whole period we actually worked on one theorem and discussed every step of it. It was an amazing feeling when I finally realized that I had proved it!
The School of Business and Economics of the Maastricht University is located in the building of the former Jesuit monastery. On the territory there is a garden adjacent to a beautiful park. Inside the university, there are many workplaces for students. Sounds of musique from the conservatory and a waterfall nearby can be heard from the offices’ windows. I hope that I will return to Maastricht next year to finish the work on my thesis and defend it.
