Theme: Public Good Power in Renaissance Florence’s Marriage & Business Networks
Speaker: Manfred J. Holler (University of Hamburg & Center of Conflict Resolution - Munich), Florian Rupp (Kutaisi International University & Center of Conflict Resolution Munich)
Annotation:
We use the Public Good (Power) Index and the Public Value to rank the marriages of business relations of 15 elite families in 15th century Florence – with a focus on the networks of the Medici and the taking of power by Cosimo de' Medici. The theoretical analysis supports the outstanding position of the Medici family and explains much of its historical success. We will also demonstrate that in the Public Good Index sense power is a non-local concept indicating that strong players form a “hot-region” about the strongest player. To obtain these results, we present an easy to perform algorithm for the computer-based determination of the Public Good Index on networks that equips us with instruments for studying the voting power in small networks.
