Description of the Program
The primary objective of the Bachelor of Arts in Russian Language (BARL) program is to impart comprehensive knowledge of the Russian language while facilitating an immersive engagement with Russian culture and literature. Students will have the opportunity to acquire insights into the historical processes of Russia, its national and confessional policies, and its contributions to global culture.
The program is structured around two principal dimensions, the foremost being linguistic preparation. It commences with foundational training in the Russian language, thereby accommodating students with no prior exposure to the language. By the end of the fourth year, participants are expected to attain proficiency in both spoken and written Russian, reaching at least a B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Through a curriculum that includes core courses delivered in Russian, advanced language instruction, and participation in summer and winter language immersion programs, students will cultivate their linguistic competencies to a professional standard, thereby positioning themselves for future careers in language education, teaching, and translation.
The second dimension of the program is devoted to fostering a comprehensive understanding of Russian history, literature, and culture. The “Practice” component of the curriculum seamlessly integrates students into the professional realm, facilitating interactions with peers, researchers, and industry professionals.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will possess the requisite expertise to pursue graduate studies in fields such as Linguistics, Russian Language, Language Pedagogy, Russian Literature, and Translation.
