Course Syllabus

Abstract

a) Prerequisites and Exclusions Basic knowledge of information systemsand digital infrastructure is required. Thus, the following courses must bepassed before this course may be attempted: IS1060 Introduction to InformationSystems, IS1181 Digital infrastructures for business, and Digital businesstransformation (IS2184, part 1). b) Abstract“Information system management”is a course for third-year undergraduate students. The course is taughtin English. It is part of the University of London curriculum. This coursestudies the management of information systems in organisations. It identifiesthe main managerial factors affecting the design and implementation ofICTs in organisations. It also introduces basic principles of project managementand governance. The course also overviews the most common strategiesassociated with ICT management and the tools used to manage these strategies.These are contrasted with organisational issues such as structure, planningand control and deployment framework. Finally, the course provides a holisticview of benefit management and information systems strategy alignment.

Learning Objectives

  • This course provides the fundamental concepts needed to understand information technology management in organisations from the perspectives of information systems, organisation and management theory. It introduces critical ideas to address the problems related to the use and implementation of information technology in organisations. By the end of this course and having completed the essential reading and activities students should be able to;
  • explain how information and communication technologies change organisations and industry structures;
  • discuss the importance of the process of managing the design and implementation of information systems on the effective value generated by their adoption;
  • explain the basic principles of project management from technical and organisational standpoints, including time, cost and performance issues;
  • evaluate alternative approaches to design organisational forms to pursue the effective implementation of information systems across the enterprise.

  • • describe the characteristics of an information infrastructure and the differences between the concept of information infrastructure and of information systems;

  • • describe the limitations of project management techniques for the coordination of complex IS projects.
  • • describe the main drivers of decisions about outsourcing business functions;
  • • describe the major risks associated with outsourcing;
  • • discuss the challenges that must be overcome to deploy an integrated project management approach;
  • • discuss the differences and complementarities between ITIL, COBIT and PDCA;
  • • discuss the importance of core competences in the context of outsourcing decisions.
  • • discuss the importance of project management and its limitations;
  • • explain the differences between firm-level, business-level and industry level information systems strategy;
  • • explain the differences between personal ICTs, group ICTs and enterprise ICTs;
  • • explain the importance of ongoing change in the context of ICT governance.

  • • explain the main managerial challenges associated with the design and deployment of business-level information systems strategies;
  • • explain what outsourcing is and why it is important in the context of ICT management;
  • • explain why cost savings are only one of the drivers of outsourcing decisions;
  • • identify the different project management areas and describe the importance of their integrations;
  • • identify the major factors that should be considered when ICT outsourcing decisions are made;
  • • master the PERT and CPM techniques;
