Competitive Advantages

The characteristics of the ICEF International Programme in Economics and Finance are its advantages. With focus on finance and economics, its curriculum features an expanded range of core courses and builds on the demanding international academic standards. The programme is taught in English. 

Curriculum. To ensure the consistency with high academic standards for professional training, the curriculum combines the best traditions of the Russian and international (British) programmes in Economics and Finance.

The curriculum combines the depth of training inherent in the British economics education with the expanded range of the core courses (economics, mathematics, special major-specific courses) and with traditions of classical Russian education (diverse range of courses in social sciences, humanities, data management; research and project work; practice).

Focus on finance.  Each of the 6 areas of specialization (Banking and Finance, Accounting and Finance, Mathematics and Economics, Economics, Economics and Management, Economics and Finance)   teaches a set of core courses in Financial Economics. These core course include Accounting (Year 2) – elective courses – Corporate Finance and Quantitative Finance (Year 4). All areas of specialization feature a structured set of courses at the confluence of Finance and data sciences, business, and quantitative methods.

- as much as 85% of students choose to major in “Economics and Finance” and “Banking and Finance”. 

- Finance and finance-related issues are the topic for nearly 70% of graduation theses, coursework and term projects;

- Graduation theses are supervised by international academics with PhD degrees in finance; every year the finance studies undertaken by undergraduate and graduate students win prizes from internal and external research competitions; 

- As much as 75% of graduates start careers in finance consulting, banking, investment and financial analysis;

- The instruction is in English and uses the best textbooks, manuals and online sources that are used by the world’s leading universities.

- Knowledge assessment uses the best practices adopted by top universities abroad: written exams use detailed, explicit tasks and assessment schemes and involve the board of examiners. The University of London examinations can be taken by students with no additional training.

- Recognition for high academic standards. With international education, graduates can continue studies at the world’s top universities. They are employed by largest international and domestic companies, banks and foundations in more than 40 countries. 

Professional Activities and Competencies of Programme Graduates

During their studies ICEF students acquire knowledge and skills for both professional and academic careers. They receive all needed competencies, both professional and personal. International level education allows graduates to become employed in largest international commercial and investment banks, auditing and consulting companies, real sector corporations and enterprises, Government and other organizations. ICEF BSc graduates that want to pursue academic career are admitted to the leading graduate programs (MSc, PhD, MBA) in the best Russian and foreign universities, such as LSE, University of Oxford, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, London Business School and others (about one-third of all graduates).

Programme Modules

The year 1 BSc students follow basic economic and mathematical disciplines, and take ICEF examinations in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Calculus and Statistics, as well as the ICEF exam in English. On the Year 1 they also have electives in the areas of Information Systems and Programming, and in Intellectual History and Philosophy.

The programme includes the following subject groups:

1. Economics: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics

2. Mathematics: Calculus, Statistics, Mathematics for economists, Mathematical methods in Economics

3. Professional specialization courses: Principles of Accounting, Principles of Corporate Finance, Principles of Banking and Finance, Management Accounting, International Economics, Investment Management, Financial Intermediation, Quantitative Finance, Abstract Mathematics, Auditing and Assurance, Financial Reporting, Optimization Theory, Mathematics of Financial Mathematics and Valuation, Monetary Economics, Industrial Economics, International Economics and other disciplines. Students can take other specializations’ courses as elective ones.

4. Humanities: Sociology in a Global Context, World Intellectual History, History of Western Philosophy, Political Science, Principles of Law, and other disciplines.

On the years 2-4 students’ research seminar is available, and students may do their research and prepare the term/degree papers under the supervision of internationally recognized researchers who publish in the international refereed journals.

Characteristics of educational modules of the program for admission before 2020 (educational standard 2014)

Module of common cycle subjects: Safe Living Basics, World Intellectual History, World Intellectual History, History of Western Philosophy, Sociology in a Global Context, Physical Training.

Major: the basis of BSc programme which accounts for two thirds of credits. Part of the subjects are obligatory, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory and Statistics, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Econometrics, etc. The list of subjects for specializations includes a large number of courses in Finance, Economics, Machine Learning, etc.

Minor: subjects of this area allow the students to obtain additional competencies outside the scope of major educational track.

Practical experience is obtained when students prepare year and Diploma papers, take part in practical activities, Project and Research seminars.

Final State Attestation includes defense of Diploma paper.

Characteristics of educational modules of the Programme for 2020 admission (educational standard 2019)

1.  Major forms the basis of future professional activities and consists of two parts, basic professional block and elective professional block.

Basic professional block contains subjects such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory and Statistics, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and others that build on those fundamental subjects. 

Elective professional block contains a large number of elective subjects and allows each student to choose their professional educational track individually. The students may start choosing subjects starting from Year 1 and in Year 2 they may choose one out of six specializations: Economics and Finance, Banking and Finance, Accounting and Finance, Mathematics and Economics, Economics and Management, Economics.

 2. Practical module forms the students’ competencies that allow them to solve practical tasks in the chosen professional area, including project work, science and research, entrepreneurship, expertise and analytics. The core of this module is research project seminar where students of all years participate. They can vary from classical research seminars to project seminars usually held in cooperation with partners in the areas of business, finance and government organizations. This module includes students’ preparation of year papers and projects, pre-defense practice and work on Diploma papers.

3. Module of common cycle subjects is aimed at broadening the horizons, mastering the instruments and methods of other subjects, developing critical thinking. The disciplines include Principles of Law, History of Western Philosophy, World Intellectual History, Sociology in a Global Context, Safe Living Basics, Physical Training, etc.

 4. Minor allows the students to obtain additional competencies outside the scope of major educational track.

 5. English Language module (since 2022) aims at ensuring the BSc graduate is ready and able to communicate professionally in English. The language of instruction for all subjects of the Programme is English. All students graduate after defending the Diploma project in English.

6. Data Culture module facilitates the mastery of contemporary technologies in Data Science and acquiring the competencies for their application in professional area.  The students can study disciplines: Information Сomputer Systems, Programming and Databases, Python Programming and Data Processing and etc.

7. Final State Attestation module includes defense of Diploma paper and allows to estimate the level of results shown by the student after having completed the educational program.

Options for Students with Disabilities

This degree programme of HSE University is adapted for students with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities. There is a specially designed Physical Education course available for such students (Syllabus of the adapted Physical Education course). Special assistive technology and teaching aids are used for collective and individual learning of students with SEN and disabilities. The specific adaptive features of the programme are listed in each subject's full syllabus and are available to students through the online Learning Management System.
