This programme provides training in Asian Studies and the history and philology of India. Students work with original texts and study and translate Vedic poetry, epic tales and Buddhist sutras. The programme also provides fundamental courses in Sanskrit as both an ancient and Middle Age language of Indian literature, in Pail- language of the Buddhist canon, and in Hindi- the language of modern India. The curriculum covers literature, history, religion, philosophy and art in both ancient and Middle Age India and students engage in the history of Indo-Aryan languages using original texts dating from ancient times to the modern day.
