Description of the professional field:

A graduate may pursue the following positions:

  1. assistant manager;
  2. analyst;
  3. supervisor;
  4. organizer and coordinator of international events of political, economic, socio-social, cultural and educational orientation;
  5. translator;
  6. researcher;
  7.  financial analyst, etc.
Description of educational modules:
1. Professional module (hereinafter referred to as Major) includes a basic and a variable part. The basic part includes disciplines in economic and political history, the history of international relations, the theory of international relations, political science, regional studies and country studies, international political economy, a second foreign language, disciplines in methods and methodology in the social sciences, sociology, political science, the history of social and political teachings. The variable part for the specialization "International Management and Finance" includes disciplines in international business and management, financial markets and institutions, and marketing.
2. The practical module forms the student's competencies, allowing to solve practical problems of the chosen professional activity.The topics of projects and topics of the final qualification paper are determined for students individually within the framework of the Research Seminars.
3. The "Disciplines of the general cycle" (DOC) module includes the following disciplines: safe living basics, discipline in physical culture and sports, as well as at least three of the five disciplines of the general university pool, which are determined by the academic director of the program.
4. The "Minor" module includes a package offer or 4 separate disciplines.
5. The module "English" includes an internal exam in English; independent exam in English; preparation and defense of the Project Proposal on the subject of the final qualification paper; additional optional academic disciplines.
6. The module "Data Culture" includes disciplines from the field of Data Culture of the basic level.
7. The module of the state final certification (hereinafter referred to as the GIA) allows you to set the level of results of mastering the EP by the student. It includes the procedure for defending the final qualifying work.

Competitive Advantages

Led entirely in English, International Bachelor's Programme in World Politics prepares students for careers in the international public and private spheres. Successful graduates receive a Russian Bachelor in International Relations from HSE. 

The programme combines the academic strengths of HSE and international experience, offering a wide selection of rigorous courses in fields ranging from history and political science to economics and mathematics, and including a choice among five different foreign languages. Students build their own intellectual and communications skills, develop strong, persuasive writing skills, and hone their ability to formulate, analyze and discuss ideas. Graduates of the programme are well prepared to begin their careers in business, civil service or academia, or to continue their education by pursuing a master’s degree in Russia or internationally.

Professional Activities and Competencies of Programme Graduates

Professional competencies of the graduates of the program are based not only in the field of international relations but also intersect with other professional spheres (depending on course selection and specialization) providing set of skills and knowledge to work in government apparatus, corporate sector, analytical and research structures or educational institutions.

By the end of the fourth year students master at the professional level at least two foreign languages, including negotiation and presentation skills, ethics of business correspondence, as well as analytical skills with the application of advanced methods of data analysis in international relations and other related fields of study.

With the possession of the modern methods of analysis graduates of the program are able to conduct scientific and applied research on the issues of international and corporate interaction and cooperation to assess acute international political and economic processes.

Graduates also have practical skills at solving problems of various types and levels of complexity in a time-limited environment. They get experience at working on both group and individual projects mastering current communication technologies and collective performance coordination.

Programme Modules

In the general curriculum bloc of subjects students study classical disciplines of the international relations related to history, philosophy, sociology, political science and basics of economic theory.

From the second year of studying begins the main bloc of subjects which covers the western approach to studying international relations. This allows a student to gain more profound and systemic knowledge of the discipline for the future analytical work.

To expand the range of their knowledge and skills in areas related to international relations students choose one of two specializations that focus on global economic and business processes, or strategic communications. The program also provides elective courses that give students an opportunity to evaluate in a more detailed way such aspects of international relations as international security, world economy and diplomacy. 

One of the core aspects of the program is the development of professional and academic aspects of the English language as well as the second foreign language. Students are offered to choose from European (French, German, Italian, Spanish) or Asian (Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Japanese) languages.  Foreign language courses cover not only the linguistic aspects but also regional including economy, culture and politics of the country/region of language use studied.

The Practice block provides for the acquisition of the skills of research activity through writing and presenting course papers; and service, research or occupational projects provided by the university. During the fourth year students are obliged to hold an internship in major-oriented analytical centers/government apparatus/large media/commercial structures.

The «Data culture» part of the curriculum also gives students the skills of analyzing and working with data.

The final element of the programme is writing as well as publicly defending a graduation qualification thesis in English on research topics related to the study of current international relations issues.

Options for Students with Disabilities

This degree programme of HSE University is adapted for students with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities. There is a specially designed Physical Education course available for such students (Syllabus of the adapted Physical Education course). Special assistive technology and teaching aids are used for collective and individual learning of students with SEN and disabilities. The specific adaptive features of the programme are listed in each subject's full syllabus and are available to students through the online Learning Management System.
