«Living abroad makes you stronger and more independent»
Hamisha Rijal from Nepal chose the Bachelor's programme in Media Communication at HSE. The programme brings together a talented group of students from different backgrounds who enjoy the university life.
Why study in Russia?
To be honest, I did not know much about Russia and HSE before coming to Russia. The decision was random and I don't regret it at all because now I am studying at Russia’s top university.
What are the reasons students choose to study abroad?
Different students have different plans for their future. As per my perception, I think studying abroad gives you more exposure and helps you to know more about different languages and cultures. And the most important thing is that living abroad, far away from your family, makes you stronger and more independent.
What are the challenges of living in Russia?
Firstly, winter. I suffer in winter. It takes a great determination to get out of your bed in winter when the weather is -20°C, -25°C. Secondly, language barrier. Studying in a country where people speak foreign language leads to difficulties in communication. And lastly, cultural shock. The excitement of getting into an international university fades as soon as you land in foreign country because we start missing our friends and family with whom we spend our whole time.
What advice would you like to give to international students who want to study at HSE?
DO NOT miss any deadlines.
It is a pretty common stereotype that Russian people don't like to smile and talk? What can you say about Russians after getting to know them?
Yes, they can be closed and straight-faced before knowing a person. It takes some time to be friends with them. But after they open up and are close with you, they can be really good and kind friends.
