Authoritarian reversal: Turkish experience; Russian hackers and American elections; final presentations and Winter school closing ceremony

The Winter school for the Faculty of Social Sciences came to an end on the January 25th.

The first part of the day was devoted to the lectures of prominent HSE professors. Ekim Arbatli gave a lecture in English on possible reasons of authoritarian reversal using the example of Turkey. During the next presentation Alexander Filippov discussed the role of international law in Russian legislative system. Interactive lecture by Vitaly Kabernik “How Russia “hacked” American democracy” had a great success among the audience which raised a lot of relevant questions.

After lunch professor Andrey Korotaev and HSE PhD student of political science Evgeny Ivanov presented Laboratory for Monitoring the risks of Socio-Political Destabilization. They introduced the results of their research on the social-demographic analysis of Arabic Revolutions.

In the evening participants presented their research projects. They offered the strategy of establishing a strong liberal party in Russia, explained the possible circumstances of Trump’s impeachment, analyzed the controversial topic of restricting freedom of speech and discussed the ways of reforming security system of Russia.

After project presentations the heads of programmes PEP and Applied Political science Oleg Y. Ananyin and Andrey S. Akhremenko gave detailed feedback on the project work and awarded certificates to the participants.

At the end of the day all the guests of Winter school took part in intellectual game organized by bachelor student of political science Dmitry Turchaninov. Participants from all the Faculty programmes were happy to engage with each other and answer tricky questions. All of them received valuable presents and unforgettable memories.
