This work is devoted to the history of the study of Vladimir-Suzdal stone architecture. The region's geopolitical features which formed this tradition, the originality of the white-stone carving of monuments, its subsequent influence on Moscow architecture attracted the attention of researchers. In addition to the question of the original appearance of monuments that have come down to us in a modified form, each generation of scientists posed its own questions. Each of the periods we are considering brought its own limitations and opportunities, allowing us to take a fresh look at architectural objects. The purpose of the work is to find out what issues were relevant in the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet periods. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were set: to find out how the attitude towards monuments changed in different periods and how this influenced the direction of scientific thought; to find out what issues were relevant for each period and what methods were used to solve them; to find out how scientific knowledge about monuments changed in each of the periods. The object of the study isscientific studies devoted to the stone architecture of the Vladimir-Suzdal land of the pre-Mongol period, as well as works examining the formation of methods for studying architectural monuments. The subject of the study is the formulation of questions and tasks in the research of domestic scientists who studied the Vladimir-Suzdal monuments. The chronological boundaries of this study are 1849-2023; the lower boundary is the year of the first publication on the Vladimir-Suzdal monuments; the upper boundary is the year of publication of the third volume of the "History of Russian Art in 22 Volumes". Re-evaluation of accumulated scientific data, consideration of the development of science and the contribution of previous generations of scientists to it is one of the urgent tasks of the 21st century. Since architecture is an object of study of various fields of science, such as archeology, history of art, history of architecture, each of them has its own historiography of the study of stone architecture. The consideration of a complex of scientific works, covering different scientific spheres of study of Vladimir-Suzdal stone architecture is the scientific novelty of this work.
