The research deals with opinions and views that existed within the system of political investigation of the Russian Empire in relation to the student movement of the late XIX — early XX century as one of the most striking subjects of the political life of the time. In this work the author seeks to identify and examine the opinion of members of the political police in the inner essence of the student movement, its place and role in a number of other currents of Russian public life of that time, participation in the formation of political parties on the eve of the First Russian revolution. In addition, the article attempts to trace the dynamics of student protest based on the record keeping documentation of Russian law enforcement agencies. As a result of research, it becomes apparent that the student movement at the turn of XIX – XX centuries was the epicenter of the attention of law enforcement. Of greatest interest to them was the evaluation of the level of politicization, the magnitude of destructive capacity and the degree of autonomy of young people's participation in the Russian revolutionary movement.
