Semiotic Analysis of Visual Data in Sociology: Case of Women's Images on "Rabotnitsa" Journal Covers

The present paper is intended to describe semiotic analysis as a method to investigate visual data from a sociological perspective. The text considers methodological principles of semiotic analysis and its position among other methods of visual images interpretation. An empirical application of the method was carried out to explore the changes of women's images on «Rabotnitsa» Journal Covers (1955-1985). The article concludes with results regarding possibilities and limitations of using semiotic analysis in sociological investigation of replicated women's images.
