Graduates of Choreographic Departements in the Labor Market: Career Paths and Opportunities

The theme of the master’s degree work is Graduates of Choreographic Departements in the Labor Market: Career Paths and Opportunities. The object of the research is graduates of choreographic departments, who are working by profession in Saint Petersburg. The subject of the study is the career paths which are formed by the graduates of choreographic departments in the labor market. The purpose of this research is to classify the types of the careers which are built by graduates of choreographic departments. This study is actual because the studies of dance sphere cover mainly ballet companies and their way of life and standards of behavior, which are working in the main theatres of cities, while the performers, who are working in ensembles and participating in musicals, are not the part of this research area. Also, the range of research works does not cover the careers of people who choose the career of teachers in the dance environment from the young age. In this study, the concept of a career and the sociological approach to its will be considered. The work will focus on the concepts of capitals and what types of capital participate in the formation of a career. The role of the body in the career development of graduates of choreographic departments will be considered too, what limitations and advantages it provides. Biographical semi-structured interview method was chosen for this research, the sample was constructed by “snowball” method. Twenty informants with a choreographic education took part in this study. As a result of the study, a typology of careers for graduates of choreographic departments, who are working in St. Petersburg, will be built.
