Features of legal status of a professional football player in relation to labour law

Annotation This paper reviews a professional football player's labor law status. The author analyzes the history of the development of a professional football player's rights and obligations both in Russia and abroad. European and American approaches to regulating the status of a professional sports player are considered. Special attention is paid to terminology that is used in scientific research on the topic and in Russian Federation's legislation. In particular, this paper contains the author's definitions for such terms as "professional football player", "sporting disqualification", etc. The author presents arguments for professional sports being a specific kind of sports and needing specific legislative regulation. National legislation is analyzed and monitored in dynamic: a trend for liberalization of labor law in the sports sphere is observed. The author also analyzes acts of such organizations as Russian Football Union, UEFA and FIFA. This paper touches current problems in transfers between football clubs and harmonization of Russian and international sports legislation. A number of suggested changes to labor codex and other federal laws is presented.
