The state ceased to be the sole source of financing for cultural production after 1991. There are some theaters, that were formed after the Soviet Union, now work through self-sufficiency: ticket sales, sponsor support and donations. The object of this research is the theatrical sphere of St. Petersburg, and the subject is (1) actors' career trajectories, (2) meanings and goals, (3) resources that are used to create a reputation and employment. The research question is the organization of trajectories in the theatrical sphere of St. Petersburg. The empirical base is 29 interviews with members of different theaters: actors, directors, producers and administrators. There is more conservative situation regarding the career paths in theater environment of St. Petersburg. Employment is of a permanent base, the success of career is not related to mobility within different theaters. Directors are the most resourceful agents in the theatrical sphere, because they often define the careers' of actors from selection of the repertoire to actors.
