Intermediality in Virginia Woolf's Prose (Based on the Novels "Orlando: A Biography" and "The Waves")

To date there are more and more intermedial studies. Virginia Woolf’s diaries, essays and epistolary heritage indicate that the intermediality of her works was the result of numerous literary experiments, search for her own artistic method and a form suitable for a comprehensive reflection of the surrounding reality and human consciousness. The relevance of this study is determined by the growing interest in interaction of literature with different types of art in Russian and foreign literary criticism. At the moment, the intermedial aspect of Virginia Woolf’s prose poetics didn’t get exhaustive attention and still requires further research. The aim of this work is to examine intermediality of Virginia Woolf’s novels "The Waves" and "Orlando". The subject of this study is the interaction of literature and other arts in the works of Woolf, the novels "Orlando" and "The Waves". The main objects of the study are the novels "Orlando" and "Waves", which are the most significant works of the mature period of the writer's work and illustrate different aspects of Woolf's intermedial poetics of this period. The role of various kinds of arts in forming of the writer’s aesthetic principles is identified in this work. Based on the knowledge gained, the novels "Orlando" and "Waves" has been analyzed to identify cases of borrowing another art form’s techniques, various principles of material organization and other manifestations of intermedial interaction. The inclusion of pictorial, cinematic, musical and theatrical codes in the text of the novels has become another way of embodying the writer’s artistic design. It allows the author to express her attitude towards issues that are of concern to her, and also extends her opportunity to recreate the inner world of a person, the peculiarities of the work of consciousness, thinking, memory, as well as to create characters, give a full description of society and portray life in all its manifestations.
