Women in Soviet Partisan Movement in Ukraine, 1941–1944

Recently, there has been a remarkable interest in the history of the Soviet partisan movement in Ukraine that was functioning during the Second World War. Nevertheless, the unique experience of women participating in these partisan detachments has been considerably neglected by the historians. The present research, therefore, aims to reconstruct female partisans’ lives in the units, detailing various aspects of their experience, such as their combat duties, everyday activities and intimate relationships. It also discusses the primary sources available, including personal testimonies and bureaucratic documents, and seeks to examine whether the gender system established in the 1930s Soviet Union has transformed in the partisan detachments during the war.
