Educational Programme: Linguistic Theory and Language Description (Master)

Final Grade: 10

Year of Graduation: 2019

The purpose of this research is to demonstrate how a dictionary could be a source of a grammatical description. I will present a grammar sketch of Goo (South Mande), a language spoken in Côte d’Ivoire by approximately 8 thousand people, which was written along with a compilation of a dictionary. The study was conducted during four one-month field trips in Côte d’Ivoire (2015-2019) supervised by Valentin Vydrin. The paper includes the description of the structure of the dictionary with discussion of some theoretical issues about bilingual dictionaries; a grammar sketch meant to be a part of the introduction to the upcoming dictionary of Goo; an analysis challenges for a synchronic description of the language, such as complex verbs and nouns. A sample of a Goo dictionary is included in the Appendix.
