Abstract Lipteeva Ekaterina Romanovna “The Role of the Context in Creating the Unconventional Meaning of the Word” Understanding the scope, subject, and tasks of semantics in the general system of linguistics depends mainly on appropriate solution of this problem. Considering the word in isolation it is possible to consider only an outer shell of the object. But the object becomes a word with particular lexical meaning when it enters the system of language and enters into various connections with other elements of the system. Determining the meaning of a word it is essential to take into consideration the relationship it acquires in context. This work is aimed to prove that the meaning of a word in contextual conditions can take new forms that differ from what dictionaries offer. The paper is based on the analysis of a literary text, which will prove the purpose of my research. The results of the work may contribute to further studies of semantics and the role of context in lexical meaning of a word. Several research methods were used in writing the paper: the method of linguistic sampling, comparative and statistical analysis, as well as the method of analyzing dictionary definitions and identifying denotations and connotations. The research work includes an introduction, three chapters, conclusion, list of references and two appendices. The volume of work is 64 pages. The first Chapter is devoted to the study of the meaning of a word in the language system, which is based on theoretical materials. The second Chapter also consists of a theory and also considers the meaning of the word, but in context. The third Chapter is devoted to the analysis and forms a practical part of the research work. It examines the meaning of a language unit inside the literary text. The results obtained from the analysis carried out in the third Chapter, are displayed as a table and a diagram, which took place in the Appendix of the final work. At the end of the final qualifying work, all the results and conclusions that were obtained in the process of studying the role of context in the formation of non-stereotypical meaning of the word are presented.
