Nowadays, more and more art historians are turning to the heritage of the Russian artists of the 19-20th centuries. This study examines the perception of the panorama "An assault upon an aul Akhulgo" (1890) by F.A. Roubaud (1856-1928) in Russian and German press of the second half of the 19th century in order to understand how the work was evaluated - as a reflection of an important moment for Russia during Caucasian war (1817-1864) or as a work of art. F. Roubaud is one of the founders of panoramic painting in Russia, the head of the battle workshop of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, the author of numerous works and 3 panoramas. The periodicals of the second half of the19th century and the perception of exhibiting panoramas at exhibitions in 1890 in Munich and in 1896 in Nizhny Novgorod were analysed in the study. As a result of fulfilling the tasks, a difference in the perception of panoramas in the two countries was established, and the main reasons that influenced that perception were identified.
