The present study investigates the mechanisms of the stress corrosion cracking and the hydrogen embrittlement, as well as the methods of the application of corrosion inhibitors to protect pipeline steel from the corrosion. The modern methodology for determining the mechanisms of destruction and the algorithm for determining the mechanism of steel destruction were described. The influence of the pH value of an aggressive environment on the rate corrosion process and the mechanism of destruction of steel was examined. The importance of corrosion monitoring was assessed. The experiment was conducted in accordance with GOST 9.901.2-89 (ISO 7539 / 2-89). Pipeline steel X60 was selected as the object of the research. The results of the experiment were received and the corresponding calculations were made. The suitability of the algorithm for determining the destruction mechanism is demonstrated in the paper. The final part of the work provides information about the collected data, existing research and reference tools. Also, it contains details about the designed software package for assessing the causes of corrosion destruction of metal materials, which is used to compile the available information on the research subject. The software includes desktop and mobile applications. This work consists of 53 pages, 18 figures, 9 tables and 31 references in bibliography.
