This research paper examined the evolution of the mechanisms for recruiting the governor corps in the United States from 1996 (the first term of the Democrat Bill Clinton) to 2020 (the only term of the Republican Donald Trump). The use of the theoretical block of literature made it possible to identify potential methodological areas of activity. Also, assumptions were made about the level of descriptiveness of evolution by the categories of governors' belonging to activities in non-state structures. The analysis was based on the biographical characteristics of the US governors elected between 1996 and 2020. The main independent variables in the analysis were: the factor of "selection" (skills of professional career activity), the factor of "inheritance" (the availability of connections with decision-makers), the factor of "prestige of education", "belonging to civil society structures" and "sale of positions".
