This research is devoted to the study of the linguistic situation in the Russian Roma Community and its linguistic identity. Roma people are a unique phenomenon of the modern world - they have managed to preserve their identity, even though they do not have their own state or a permanent place of living. The main goal of this paper is to examine the role of knowledge of the Romani language in defining the self-identity among the Russian Roma. This research is based on online interviews with members of the community. The questions for the interview were designed so as to cover the most essential topics for this research, such as self-identification, the usage of the Romani language, and so on. We predict that the analysis of these interviews will confirm the importance of knowing the Romani language for the self-identification of the members of the Russian Roma Community.
