Student: Liseev Georgiy

Educational Programme: Russian and Comparative Literature (Master)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2021

This work is a study of the classic novel "Mrs. Dalloway" by the English writer Virginia Woolf from the point of view of the theory of "emotional communities". Previously, this concept was applied only to the analysis of real historical eras, so there is an experimental and innovative beginning in the work. In the course of my work, I substantiate the application of the concept of "emotional communities" to literary research, and also conduct a detailed analysis of the text of the novel "Mrs. Dalloway" from the point of view of the emotions experienced by the characters, and the bonds formed around these emotions between people. In addition, I offer an interpretation of the general meaning of the novel based on my analysis. As a result of the analysis, I was able to come to the conclusion that emotional connections between characters, forming a network of “emotional communities”, play a decisive role in understanding the meaning of Virginia Woolf’s novel, which in turn becomes a brilliant literary illustration of the concept of “emotional communities”.
