This thesis explores the influence of socioeconomic and personal characteristics, the presence of past negative experiences, and a number of external components, such as the opinions of friends and relatives, on the problem of self-medication in Russia. During the analysis of the available medical and economic literature, new explanatory variables were formulated. A study in the format of a self-administered survey in Russian with a target population between 18 and 30 years of age was conducted. The model built on the data revealed that, among all factors, advertising of medications had a dramatically large influence on the risk of self-medication. The thesis aims to highlight new reasons influencing the problem in order to better understand it on an individual level.
