Psychoanalytical Peculiarities/Features of Work in Non-native Language

Due to increased mobility of employees, who study foreign languages to work in foreign companies or to relocate to other countries, it becomes relevant to study psychoanalytical pecularities of work in non-native language. From a psychoanalytical point of view, the process of working in a non-native language is influenced by the connection of language with the main stages of the development of the psyche, the formation of professional identity and the identity of a large group. To identify the exact patterns of the working process in a non-native language, the cases of foreign companies on the introduction of a lingua franca among all employees and individual clients’ experience related to the study of a foreign language and its application at work were studied. Firstly, the results showed that the switch in language in working processes influences the sense of professional identity. It can be used as a tool to reduce paranoid, separation or Oedipal anxiety, which will lead to development and strengthening of professional identity. On the other hand, it can increase these types of anxiety and lead to deintegration of professional identity. Secondly, professional identity is formed under the influence of the language in which professional terms are learned and profession is gained, or “work mother tongue”. Finally, through the use of a new language, there is a possibility of transition from the False Self to the True Self. Using foreign language at work can influence work process in a positive way, since it is less emotional compared to work in mother-tongue and more focused on solving the work task. The results of this study have practical significance in the implementation of a foreign corporate language and in the process of working with clients with such experience.
