Forms of Civil Participation of Grassroots Eco-activists from Saint Petersburg

In modern Russia grassroots environmental movements are expanding, becoming more effective and safe way for activists to participate. Grassroots communities are characterized by a horizontal organizational structure, special communication and building social networks. This work is aimed at studying urban communities of eco-activists at the grassroots level in Saint Petersburg. The purpose of the work is to analyze the practices and forms of civic participation of eco-activists from Saint Petersburg. The theoretical part of the work was aimed at studying the discussion around the understanding of citizenship, environmental citizenship and citizenship of care. In addition, the conceptualizations of environmental social movements and neighborhoods were considered. The research methodology is a case study, the empirical part of the work presents an analysis of two different ecological communities. The paper also provides a comparison and typology of groups of eco-activists.
