This thesis examines how historical memory narratives about the French period in Algeria impact Franco-Algerian relations. Through an examination of French Senate official records, the research explores the popular narratives of this historical era and their influence on current diplomatic relations. The goal of the study is to understand how these narratives influence attitudes and laws, which in turn impacts the relationship between France and Algeria. The theory suggests that while resistance to a new relationship model can prolong tensions and mistrust, positive narratives and efforts at reconciliation may improve diplomatic ties. The study uses narrative and content analysis to track changing trends, identify important themes in historical memory narratives, and evaluate the effects on contemporary relations. The research sheds light on the complex nature of historical memory and how it influences international relations by tracing the development of these narratives. The study's conclusions demonstrate a shift in historical memory narratives concerning Algeria's French colonial past toward extreme forms of both “nationalist” and “liberal” narratives. The complicated Franco-Algerian relationship is impacted by the French government's actions toward Algeria, which blend both viewpoints despite the liberal narrative's dominance in the country.
