The issue of migration is always acute for the host countries, as it certainly causes its own socio-economic problems. But is it true? are migrants the only problems for the country they come to? Can this problem bring any positive aspects? The migration crisis has emerged as a significant global challenge, profoundly impacting destination countries like Italy. Situated at the forefront of Mediterranean migration routes, Italy has experienced substantial waves of migration in recent years. This paper endeavors to investigate the «Impact of the Migration Crises on the Socio-Economic Development of Italy» to discern the complexities inherent in this multifaceted phenomenon. Migration crises are characterized by a confluence of political, social, economic, and humanitarian factors, often precipitated by conflicts, environmental disasters, economic disparities, and governance issues within nations. Such crises compel individuals and families to undertake perilous journeys in pursuit of safety and better opportunities, rendering migration a global phenomenon with far-reaching consequences. The European Union has grappled with migration issues for decades, but the early 21st century witnessed a significant escalation of the migration crisis, particularly following pivotal geopolitical events such as the Arab Spring. In Italy there were several huge waves of migration flow: 2011, 2015-2016 and the most recent one in 2022. Period of 2015-2016 was a turning point, marked by unprecedented migrant arrivals in Europe, including Italy. The migration crisis has profoundly affected Italy's socio-economic landscape, testing its resources and infrastructure. Inadequate burden-sharing mechanisms at the EU level, coupled with internal political divisions, have hindered Italy's efforts to address the influx of migrants, exacerbating tensions within the country and across the EU. As a result of the migration crises, the labor market has undergone significant changes, such as shifts in the level of employment, which is one of the factors contributing to the decrease in the unemployment rate in Italy. The dynamics of wages also depends on the migration flow, since migrants offer cheap labor, which is preferred by the employer. As for the social consequences, this greatly influences the mood of Italians and their attitude.
