Short Animated Film Cirque du Masque

The subject of the visual study are masked characters in Japanese animation and the role that masks play in the creation of their images. The sections examine various animation series and films with characters that fit the highlighted tropes, and introduce the historical context and cultural significance of masks in Japan. The result of the work is a visual study in the form of a longread analyzing a number of characters and identifying the various roles of masks in Japanese animated films and series.
