Creation of a Multimedia Project With Data Visualization About the Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank

Student: Viatokho Tatiana

Supervisor: Alexey Novichkov

Faculty: Faculty of Creative Industries

Educational Programme: Journalism (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2024

The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) occurred in early days of March of 2023. The bank's bankruptcy became the largest since the crisis of 2008 and was the second largest in US history. As part of the graduation project, a multimedia project was created — an interactive timeline with data visualizations integrated into the narrative. The media product is also published in Frank Media, one of the authoritative media outlets that cover topics of economics and finance. A complex approach to the process of creating projects of this kind has been proposed. The approach is characterized by attention to constructing narratives and working with complex terms that may not be clear for an unprepared reader. The use of the described complex approach is intended to solve the industrial problem, which is the lack of a coherent and systematic way of covering economic crises. At the same time, the approach may be used within other industries, not only financial. The project is distinguished by its high novelty: in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet the collapse of SVB is poorly covered. At the same time, projects that would be created on the basis of a complex approach are not found in Russian. As part of the theoretical framework, theories have been studied to justify the chosen format, the identified target audience, and design solutions. Theoretical framework includes reflection on the theory of generations, the theory of narrative visualization and color theory. This section also provides an overview of key media studies for the topic of the project. The legal note describes risks that may arise when creating projects of this kind. An important part of this section was the analysis of legislative acts. This was followed by practical and theoretical personal advice on legal support. Key words: timeline, data visualization, Silicon Valley Bank, crisis, design, landing page creation
