Reading remains a popular pastime, but it is difficult to predict bestsellers due to subjective and objective factors. The quality of a work, as evidenced by ratings, awards, and expert recognition, is a major determinant of demand because books as works of art are experiential goods. Literary awards, by increasing a book's visibility and the reader recognition, serve as both quality signals and marketing tools. However, in some cases, an author's popularity, even without a high artistic level, can lead to market success. The study aims to quantify the impact of author's reputation and book characteristics on demand in the Russian literary market.
