Moscow Fine Art Exhibitions in 1917–28: Social and Economic Aspects

The purpose of this study was to identify the process of changing the economic strategies of the exhibition during 1917-1928. The object was defined as fine art exhibitions held in Moscow, and the subject was a set of social practices and representations of art market agents that determine the conditions of its functioning. To achieve this goal, a set of previously unpublished sources was involved. It allowed us to significantly expand the understanding of the organization of exhibitions in the period under review. The institutional approach, the theory of social space and the social history of art were chosen as the methodological basis of the research. As a result of the work done, it was possible to determine the economic conditions of the functioning of the art market, to identify the degree of influence of state structures on the activities of art associations and to trace the process of changing exhibition strategies.
