Short Animated Film Third Wheel

This visual research is devoted to the Soviet cartoons which main plot is based on the problems in character’s relationship. The experience of love always has been one of the most popular themes for different stories, and animation wasn’t exception. This study focuses on how desperate love was depicted in Soviet animation, what means of expression were used to tell the story and how political and economical changes in the USSR affected the authors and how this influenced their works. The selected material was divided into three categories depending on the type of plot tropes. The aim was to find similar points between different cartoons by category and analyze changes in art and narration style throughout the Soviet period. The objectives were: to select Soviet cartoons about unrequited love, to compare the storylines, find similarities and differences, to write the longread.
