Two Music Videos With an Emphasis on Lighting Techniques

In this visual research, the author examines lighting techniques and patterns in music videos of 1981-1989, setting the task of systematizing the trends of this time period, as well as identifying innovative techniques of that time in the framework of work on light. Lighting techniques are an integral storytelling tool. Their careful using will definitely be noticed by the viewer, will help create the impression desired by the author and will enhance the impact of musical rhythms on the listener. In 1984, MTV founded the annual MTV Video Music Awards, a multi-nomination ceremony, and established an official approach to music video analysis. Therefore, the author of this visual research uses the rating of the best video clips of the eighties according to MTV as a guarantor of product quality and a certain criterion for the popularity and success of a video clip. The author is primarily interested in exploring lighting techniques in those clips that have become widespread and, therefore, influenced other figures. And highlight trends, techniques, trends and patterns of lighting techniques. That is why this analysis is based on the list of winners of the MTV Music Awards within the selected decade, the list of “TOP 100 music videos of the eighties according to MTV,” but is not limited by this. The author also includes in the analysis important works that are not included in these list, but which, in the author’s opinion, are exceptional in work on light, experiments, and popular.
