Year of Graduation: 2024

This work includes the visual research, titled “The techniques of visual representation of emotions in full-length animated films between the years of 2000 and 2023”, which is a part of the graduation project that involves the making of an animated movie “Satan. Suicide Note.” The plot of the film is based on Satan finding himself in a human body and suddenly starting to experience emotions. In order to convey the emotions of a character, who has never experienced them, simply using facial expressions won’t be enough. It is crucial to understand what kind of techniques can be used to create such a vivid image of a character and to develop their story. The goal of the research is to reveal, formulate, and analyze the techniques of visual representation of emotions in animation. The main conclusions of the research are: - bodily transformation, additional figures, natural phenomena, and the colour scheme of an episode can all be used for the sake of hyperbolizing a character’s emotions; - additional figures could be specially generated characters; - natural phenomena can be directly caused by the characters’ emotions, or exist separately from the characters (as a form of visual symbolism); - negative emotions can be represented by desaturated/dark colours, whereas positive emotions can be represented by vibrant/bright colours.
