To be a Woman: an Exhibition That Thematises Feminine as a Performative Practice

Student: Li Diana

Supervisor: Diana Machulina

Faculty: Faculty of Creative Industries

Educational Programme: Contemporary Art (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 10

Year of Graduation: 2024

The visual research is part of the graduation project " To be a woman: an exhibition that thematises feminine as a performative practice". It explores the work of female artists whose artistic practice touches upon the exploration of the 'feminine' in some way. The title "Women's Safe Places: Places and Situations in which femininity becomes safe" suggests that the author is actually interested in examining the various ways in which women's "safe spaces" can be created, but the question of whether there are "women's safe spaces" as such is rhetorical. The notion of "safety" is introduced more to establish comparisons that help to delineate the author's point of view than to express the content of the works discussed in the study. In her selection of works, the author more often relies on the notion of "anxiety", which interests her in the context of creating "safe spaces" not out of a desire for a sense of calm, but, on the contrary, to make various uncomfortable and problematic areas visible to her readers.
