The visual style development for the “Hard2Kill” diploma project involved several tasks related to a thorough study of the game's setting. This required an analysis of the culture of Berlin in the 90s, including the appliance of citizens' flats, streets, and nightclubs. In particular, it was important to explore how the youth of the 90s expressed themselves. The main goal of the thesis project was to replicate the atmosphere of that time period within the game engine. In terms of research methods, they can be divided into theoretical and practical. Theoretical methods involve reviewing literature and cinematography of 90s which describe events that took place in Berlin during that time. Practical methods include using progressive JPEG and reviewing work, done in the game engine, with the ability to correct errors immediately. The study presents a developed artistic style with references of Berlin culture in the 90s.
