This work is devoted to studying the activities of companies in the field of achieving sustainable development using the example of oil and gas companies in Russia and China. The purpose of the study was to analyze the activities of oil and gas companies within the framework of sustainable development and determine the features of the implementation of ESG principles in order to increase competitiveness To achieve this goal, it is necessary to solve the following tasks: identify the features of the concepts of “sustainable development” and “ESG”, their role and significance at the current stage of development of the world economy; explore the features of implementing sustainable development goals Russian and Chinese companies; determine the relationship between ESG principles and the company’s competitiveness as part of calculations through correlation analysis. The object of the study is the sustainable development strategies of oil and gas companies in Russia and China. The subject of the study is the experience of implementing sustainable development projects of Russian and Chinese oil and gas companies. As part of this study, a hypothesis was put forward - the introduction of sustainable development principles has an ambiguously effect on the competitiveness of the company. The scientific novelty of this study is due to the analysis of strategies and activities within the framework of sustainable development of companies in the oil and gas industry in Russia and China. The use of the latest available data highlights the uniqueness and novelty of this study. The results obtained formed the basis for the development of comparative characteristics that determine country specific features of the implementation of activities within the framework of the SDGs.
