A Periodical Exploring the Visual Culture of Japan

Student: Kabanova Varvara

Supervisor: Evgeny Grigoriev

Faculty: School of Arts and Humanities

Educational Programme: Design (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2024

The post-war period in Japanese visual culture is the least studied and described compared to other periods. This study aims to clarify this topic by addressing the political, economic, and social context of the era that shaped a dramatic transformation of artistic expression. The text consistently analyses the events that occurred in Japan during the Shōwa era, their impact on human life and self-awareness, and the visual representation of these moods through periodicals. The result is the identification and justification of the characteristic design features of the pre-war and post-war periods in terms of colour solutions, themes, and composition.
