Features of Management of Japan's Karafuto Governorate in Southern Sakhalin (1925-1945)

Nowadays, the research of different colonial systems and their impact on modernity is a relevant topic. In this way, the Japanese Empire stands out, in which the direct dichotomy of “metropolis-colonies” cannot always be assessed unambiguously. Especially when discussing the status of the governorate of Karafuto, which was undergoing notable changes in all areas of development in the region after the signing of the Soviet–Japanese Basic Convention in 1925. That is why the purpose of this research is to combine and analyze various fields of development of the region in the general context of interaction with the Japanese colonial system in order to highlight the management features. Therefore, research design will include an historical-genetic, systemic and comparative historical analysis as the most suitable scientific methods. The first chapter contains an analysis of the interaction of the central government of Japan in relation to the governorate of Karafuto in the overall colonial system, as well as identifies the features. In the second chapter, the economic development of the territorial entity, processes and changes that took place during the period under consideration are characterized. In addition, the third chapter is devoted to the socio-cultural life of the Karafuto governorate, including not only demographic policy, but also the spiritual sphere of the region.
