The US-Mexico border and the surrounding borderlands have become a major topic of discussion among the US establishment. Increasing cross-border migration in the era of globalization has serious implications for the national security and economic status of the United States. Dissenting views on the border have emerged in US foreign policy discourse. The issue has received particular attention during the recent 2016 and 2020 presidential election campaigns. While there is extensive research on the discourse of the border and the impact of presidential campaigns on foreign policy, there has been little research linking the two. This paper attempts to fill this niche by identifying key features of US foreign policy discourse on the US-Mexico border using the 2016 and 2020 presidential election campaigns as an example.
