Addressing Current Challenges of Environmental Education in Russia and Japan: Exploring the Potential for Cooperative Solutions Amidst global environmental concerns, scholars and policy makers are recognizing the need for development and dissemination of environmental education globally. Various ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) practices have been introduced in Japan and Russia in the last decades, yet they are still not widespread and seem to demonstrate low effect. Despite the fact that the topic of Japanese and Russian environmental education has been covered by several researchers, the issue of current problems, their underlying legislative, economic and social roots and possible ways to solve them has not been considered sufficiently. Thus, this study aims to specify the present-day obstacles to environmental education in both countries and examine possible cooperation. Through a mixed-methods approach including literature review, statistical analysis, and a small-scale survey, the research seeks to assess the status of environmental education. Furthermore, future prospects for development and potential Russian-Japanese cooperation within the field will be explored. Keywords: environmental education, Russian-Japanese cooperation, sustainable development, ESD
