THE SUMMARY The thesis on “Official Development Assistance as an Instrument of Japan's Foreign Policy Towards the Member States of Association of Southeast Asian Nations” is devoted to the complex dynamics of Japan's foreign policy strategy. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of official development assistance as a key diplomatic tool in Japan's engagement with member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The concept of official development assistance is explained. A specific focus is made on the unique features of Japanese ODA compared to the features of aid provided by other donor countries, that is, its philosophy, motivations and principles that guide Japan's decision-making. Concrete cases of Japan's ODA engagement with ASEAN countries are examined. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of ODA as an instrument of Japan's foreign policy in ASEAN and its role in promoting Japan's interests in the international arena.
