This research deals with Europeanisation in de facto states, employing the examples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. On their own, both Europeanisation and de facto states are areas of study that exhibit rapid development, but works combining these two realms have so far been few. This paper is the first to apply Knill and Lehmkull's approach to Europeanisation to the cases of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It sheds light on which mechanisms of Europeanisation come to the fore in the conditions of a de facto state, and which lose their significance. Moreover, this paper contributes to the literature's understanding of EU policy in the unusual and challenging environment of de facto states.
