This research focuses on the social history of the Eastern Jin Empire (317-420). The main research question is whether social mobility took place during the Eastern Jin period. The aim of our study is to reconstruct the social history of the Eastern Jin Empire from the materials of the ‘Biographies’ of Jin shu. Due to the large number of personalities, the prosopographical method of research was implemented. As a result of our research, we found that social mobility in the Eastern Jin Empire was not institutionalised to a sufficient extent, which is shown in the section ‘Biographies’ of Jin shu.
