Jane Eyre and Participatory Culture: when Readers Become Authors

The purpose of this study is to trace the historical and sociocultural connections between the genres of parody, parallel romance and fan fiction. This is achieved through the analysis of literary works that arose as a reaction to Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre. The study attempts to prove the role of participatory culture in the development of literature and proposes the definition of “participatory culture literature” as a means of grouping designated genres into one semantic category. Due to the construction of this category, the study attempts to legitimize fan fiction and find its place in the history of literature.
